In order to learn to
be funny, you must learn to avoid not being
funny. Hence the usefulness of this lesson. Of course, there are
many ways of not being funny, but I only want to illustrate a
particular one, one that my countrymen at least seem to have
mastered thoroughly.
I believe in demonstrating through examples, of course, so here's a
joke in excellent health:
Why was the man with six fingers called Hanuman by his friends?
'Twas his name!
So far so good. Now hand over the unsuspecting fellow to one of
these aforementioned murderers, and watch how he goes about his job
with professional ease. Here's what the remains look like when he
is done with it:
Y WS D MAN WTH 6 FNGRS CLD HANUMAN BY HIS FRNDS???????????

"AAJ MERA INSANIYAT SE VISHWAS UTH
GAYA "!!!!
_____________________________________________________________________________
Now I will not embark upon a discussion on the quality of the
underlying joke - that certainly does not belong in the present
lesson - my point, however, is that irrespective of whether the
underlying joke has a humour value or not, we can safely say that
in the form it has been presented, it has none.
I hope the illustrations are self-explanatory. Here is the basic
guideline: when stating a joke that is in the classical
cue-punchline format, it is best to state it as shown below using a
beautiful viola joke:
How do you keep your violin from getting stolen? (The cue...)
Keep it in a viola case. (... followed immediately by the
punchline.)
That's it. A good joke should require no extra ornamentation to add
to its humour value - indeed, such extravagances turn out to have
the opposite effect in reality. In order to be a good humorist, you
must always keep that in mind.
That's all folks!
